1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 4018 Miles
There have been solid investments in this classic to make it look sharp without ever taking away from the true time capsule vibe. The classic and correct yellow paint is almost like a khaki safari shirt, and the white roof is like a pith helmet. So this one has the color theme to be an old-school adventurer. The finish is sleek from a more modern respray, and it does a terrific job of showing off the clean lines of the iconic FJ. You see this attention to detail in all the tough-as-nails features, like the steel bumpers, Warn locking hubs, and full-size spare mounted to the dual rear doors. This is quite an authentic presentation, but if you look closely, they thoughtfully integrated some useful upgrades. For example, the shocks are upgraded to Skyjacker units, but they don't give this an outrageous stance. And while tires keep the classic dimensions, the modern Kumho Road Venture units are nicely engineered to maximize usefulness on and off the trail. Inside is more of the time capsule feeling. Clean floors, good vinyl, and iconic rear jump seats are exactly what you want. The well-integrated roll bar reminds you that you can take the roof off for a true open-air 4x4 experience. Bucket seats up front mean this one will always keep you comfortable. Plus, the classic thin and grippy steering wheel with the correct Toyota center cap feels great in your hands. Even the AM radio is still there for a display. It makes for a vintage and robust feeling that's at the core of the FJ40's appeal. Just like the rest of the vehicle, the engine bay has a clean, correct, and functional style. There's an attractiveness everywhere from the cool classic Toyota logos in the stampings to useful features like the aluminum radiator. Plus, a later example like this one has some of the best driving features. For example, you get the same F-series inline-six motor that has been the backbone of Toyota toughness, but in these later Land Cruisers, it has been enlarged to 4.2-liters. This even has a header to let it exhale better and have a nicer tune. And you get to take better advantage of this added power with the four-speed manual transmission. The two-speed transfer case and modern M/T tires allow this impressive classic to still live up to its go-anywhere 4x4 reputation. Plus, power steering, power brakes, and front disc brakes are great for the street or the trail.
